  • Openness and Integration | Dean Laura McDougall of the University of Alberta School of Public Health Visits Wenzhou Medical University

  • From June 27 to 30, Professor Laura McDougall, Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, Canada, led a delegation to Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) for a fourday series of institutional exchange activities. The visit was aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between the two universities and advancing educational innovation and research collaboration in the field of public health. During the visit, Dean McDougall attended the WMUUA Joint Management Committee Meeting and the ChinaCanada Friendly University Academic Conference & Public Health Forum, and also toured the WMU History Museum and the affiliated Eye Hospital.

    On the morning of June 28, the Fourth WMUChinaCanada Medical Education Academic Conference was successfully held. At the conference, Dean McDougall and Dean Liu Xiaodong of WMU’s School of Public Health each delivered insightful academic presentations. Their reports combined international cuttingedge perspectives with a close focus on the realities of public health education development in China, sparking lively discussions among attendees and laying a solid foundation for deeper integration in public health discipline development between the two institutions.

    On the afternoon of June 28, the WMUUA Joint Management Committee Meeting officially took place. Leaders and experts from both sides gathered to engage in indepth consultations on core topics including highlevel medical talent cultivation, the sharing of quality educational, medical, and research resources, and the organization of regular academic conferences. Together, they deliberated on cooperation strategies and charted a shared vision for future development.

    On June 29, the ChinaCanada Friendly University Academic Conference & Public Health Forum was held as scheduled, bringing together renowned experts and scholars from the University of Alberta, Zhejiang University, and China Medical University. Dean McDougall shared advanced experiences in Canada’s public health system development and talent cultivation. Professor Scott Phillips, Associate Dean for International Affairs at the University of Alberta School of Public Health, provided a detailed interpretation of global intellectual property and clinical development regulations for pharmaceutical innovation. Professor Wang Hongmei from Zhejiang University’s School of Public Health delivered a special report on the development and practical application of patientreported outcome measures. Professor Shi Xin, Dean of the School of Health Management at China Medical University, shared insights on digital health management and cuttingedge digital health technologies. Faculty and students actively raised questions, engaging in deep discussions on topics such as differences between Chinese and foreign public health education and international research collaboration channels, effectively broadening their international research perspectives.

    During her visit, Dean McDougall toured the WMU History Museum and the affiliated Eye Hospital, gaining an indepth understanding of the university’s educational heritage, development achievements, and distinctive contributions in public health areas such as myopia prevention and visual health intervention. She highly commended WMU’s innovative practices in public health.

    The successful hosting of this series of events has further established a multilevel, regular platform for ChinaCanada cooperation. Looking ahead, the School of Public Health will leverage the joint MPH program as a cornerstone, using distinctive interdisciplinary strengths as a bridge to continuously expand the boundaries of cooperation, create a new paradigm for Sinoforeign public health education collaboration, and contribute to the cultivation of highlevel public health professionals with a global vision.
